Last week someone I know made a comment along the lines of “Disney teaches women that they need to be saved by a man”
That reeeeeaalllly pissed me off, But rather than start an argument that wouldn’t come to anything I thought I’d share with you reasons why I believe Disney princesses are worth watching and are good role- models!
***THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR ALMOST ALL THE DISNEY PRINCESS FILMS****
Now I’ll admit that yes the earliest Disney films (Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty) do tend to have the whole saved by a man vibe going on, Personally, I believe that’s where it ends though.
The Little Mermaid isn’t about being saved by a man, It’s about a woman discovering who she really is. Ariel doesn’t want to go up to human world just to be with Eric, yes he’s part of her reason but she’s had this dream all her life. All you have to do is look at the collection of human objects she had for proof.
Beauty and the Beast, This is the one I am most passionate about. Nothing annoys me more than when people compare this film to Stockholm Syndrome which by definition means a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with the captors. Belle did none of this, she freely chose to stay with him in place of her father yet refused to give the beast any respect until he returned the favour and she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and stand up to him. If Belle had wanted to be saved by a man she would have just married Gaston.
Pocahontas is about two cultures coming together through the love of Pocahontas and John Smith, They fight for the right to be together. If anything they save their different cultures from becoming at war with each other.
MULAN SAVED CHINA!! she took the place of her father in the war and proved she had what it takes. How can you not say she was badass!!!
The Princess and The Frog. How can you say that Tiana is a bad role model, she wasn’t waiting for any man to come and save her she got up every day and worked to two jobs to save up for her dream, and like Belle, she gave Naveen no respect until he extended her the same courtesy.
Tangled. Flynn had no intention of saving anyone when he went into that tower her just needed a place to hide. Nor was Rapunzel looking to be saved in fact she tied him up and threatened him with a frying pan until she realized he meant her no harm. She then makes him take her to see the lights if he wants the crown back. Also, she takes on Mother Gothal without out a second’s hesitations and only stops fighting when she realizes Eugene is in danger. If anything they save each other!
Brave. Merida fought for her own hand it marriage and proved that she had what it takes to run a country without a man at her side.
I realize there are probably more examples and reasons but these are just my personal beliefs as to why I love and respect these characters. I would never stop a child from looking up to these characters. I grew up with Cinderella and Belle and Ariel and any time and new Disney film come out I’m just as excited now as I was when I was little.
Disney is magical and I believe.
Thanks for reading everyone!
Please let me know why you think the Disney women or men are role models, Did they inspire you?
